Veterinary Infrastructure And
Service Delivery System
In Maharashtra, the Government managed network includes Institute of Veterinary Biological Products
(Pune), six Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratories, laboratories of frozen sperms, District Artificial
Insemination Centres, mobile & static Polyclinics, Veterinary dispensaries and Primary veterinary aid
centres. In order to further strengthen the veterinary services, a University “Maharashtra Animal &
Fishery Science University (MAFSU)” has been carved out of the four Agricultural Universities in the
state by transferring five Veterinary Colleges, one PG veterinary institute and Dairy Technology College.
The State Governments efforts are supported by Maharashtra Livestock Development Board (MLDP)
which implements bovine breeding project and encourage livestock insurance. In addition, milk
cooperatives, BAIF, JK Trust are also active in Maharashtra providing AI facilities to dairy farmers.
During 2012-13, 28,552 bovines were vaccinated under centrally sponsored FMD control programme.
Likewise, 3921 bovines have been vaccinated for Haemorrhagic Septicaemia, 408 for Black Quarter
using NADRS inputs and about 16,060 animals were treated.
