Guidelines for type classification of cattle and buffaloes for functional traits

Traits that support high production or increase animal’s ability for longer productive life are very important to breed future cows and buffaloes.Traditionally, the farmers in India had been placing emphasis on selection ofgood functional characters in animals. However, over the time the emphasison functional characteristics was diluted and more emphasis was given onappearance, colour and horn shape. This document is an effort to reintroducebody characters, which are functionally important in dairy cattleand buffaloes in Indian dairy systems. The physical appearance of animal in terms of all body characteristicsassociated with productivity and fertility of animal is termed as Type.
